That afternoon, after Conner had been practicing ‘card tricks’ all morning, Hecate came into the kitchen where he was just getting ready to start again after lunch.

“Timothy, we need to make a set of devices for you. There are some things I want to teach you for which you will need them to focus your growing powers.”

“Sure, Hecate. Is now good?”

“Now is good.”

They went down to the design studio.

“Can you make these in a different color material, Timothy? We should keep them straight, as they will work better if they are keyed to their owner.”

“Sure, Hecate. Let me change out the filament.”

Conner changed the filament out in the 3-D printer, from her red to green, which he had plenty of in stock. He and Prescott had often made plantings – bushes and trees – for their 3-D client models. The red they had used for modeling steel frames for builder guidance in interpreting their plans.

Conner called up the stereolithography files and queued them to the printer.

Conner and Hecate sat waiting for the printer. It would take several hours to make all the parts.

“I must caution you against using any of these devices without my supervision, Timothy. Focused with the devices, your burgeoning powers would be sufficient to cause considerable harm if applied in error.”

“Wouldn’t it be better for me not to use them at all, then, Hecate?”

“No, Timothy. It is clear to me you are tapping into the same powers I use. This will be of benefit to us in the coming confrontation. But you need practice. Under supervision, yes, but practice nonetheless.”

As each set of parts was complete, Hecate built the device, then handed it to Conner.

“Feel its power, Timothy. Carefully! Do not attempt to use it, just feel for the device in your hand, concentrate upon it, and feel its readiness for your use.”

Conner held the device in his hand and reached out to it with his mind in the manner he had been learning. The device began to glow softly in his hand.

“I can feel it, Hecate.”

“Good. Now set it down on the table. The power you feel is not the device, it is your power the device is picking up. The device is now keyed to you, and will be more useful to you if no other uses it.”

“But only you and I can use them, right?”

“For some of them, Timothy, that is true. Others will respond to others in the family. You must keep them to yourself, and allow no other to touch them.”

“Including you?”

“Including me. But I will not touch them, Timothy. I want you to have the full extent of your powers available. It will be helpful in protecting us both.”

“All right. I’m with you, Hecate, come what may. You know that.”

“I know. I love you, too, Timothy.”
